Who We Are

The Kirkland Foundation is a 501c3 public charity founded in October 2016 to support animal welfare efforts in the Central Valley. We’re staffed by passionate animal people who believe that every creature matters. We are convinced that we can have an impact on health and welfare of animals in the Central Valley and drive down the area’s disconcerting euthanasia rates.

We can always use passionate, caring volunteers to help us rescue and care for animals (feeding, cleaning, treating and socializing a bunch of furballs is a lot of work), transport them out of area (valid driver’s license and good driving record are necessary) and educate others on the need to spay/neuter and treat animals with grace and dignity. We often hold fundraising events and other ways for you to get involved.

Yesterday we joined a throng of feline faithful in pilgrimage to The Cat House On The Kings.com for their annual open house. Held every May, the CHOTK open house is an opportunity for crazy cat people and their enablers to visit the 800+ self-entitled furry lifers wandering the grounds, mingle with those who get your “Think outside the box” t-shirt with cat squatting, snap a selfie with High Priestess Lynea Lattanzio and maybe score a gift basket in one of the raffles held throughout the day. Did, did, did, didn’t.

We’ve been a few times—Cat House has been around 34 years—and have always enjoyed collaboration with their crew—ground-breaking FIP work, spay/neuter/medicals, surrenders, supplies and transports, adoptions, fundraisers and even helping fund the Club One Casino Senior Center for scruffy old-timers. In between selfies with attendees, we visited with good friend Tammy Barker-Noel and husband DJ Terror talking solar capacity, golf-carts, people management, playlist selection and b#tching about the Central Valley’s chronic animal crisis.

We wrapped the visit with a sneak peek of Lynea’s Japanese garden—"We covet what we see, Clarice”—and hustled back to pep talk volunteers working on the other project, intake a stray old-timer rescued from an abandoned home covered in filth—back to reality—and watch Golden Tempo pull off a 23-1 upset in greatest two minutes in sports. GT was no Rich Strike or Mine That Bird (look them up on YouTube) but still a great run!

In January, we posted about Frances, one of New Feet Pete's entourage, who'd lost her rear legs to trauma almost two years ago. With Pete now skidding around SuperMom Laura McComb's house on his version 3.0 Purrellis with shock absorbing waffle soles, it's time to turn our attention to Frances and get her back in four paw drive.

Earlier this week, Pete's SuperDoc, Silas Fetherston of RRVSS, sent Mama Laura and us a detailed email outlining her options (unique ITAP implants or exterior prosthetics like Pete's) and wanted our thoughts. A short while later, Laura mommed him back with her own detailed email discussing her perspective on the options including a well-considered grid comparing the pros and cons of the two alternatives and their impact on Frances' quality of life. Shallow simpletons that we are, our only value add was "Which version looks cooler?" 🙂

But part of the consideration has to be maintaining Frances' status quo. Even without her rear legs, this chubby tabby manages to move around the house, use her litter pan without making a crazy mess and keep up with Pete's squad, and in truth, she'd be ok as is. That said, Frances Belle deserves to voice her opinion, and while she can't articulate that in the King's English, that attached video speaks for her. Who are we to deny a survivor with her grit and determination better mobility?

Frances...LFG!

Hey Kyle. When you get to congress will you please pass a law that any vet that says they are a "hospital" cannot refuse to care for a sick or injured animal. I have seen that very thing happen first hand. I will be voting for you.

Love you Frances Belle🌷

Frances B is the “Mom” of the entourage. She keeps all those boys in check, with love of course. We can’t wait for her to run- and she will!

Best wishes pretty one 🐾🐾❤️

Last May, Suzie Scoot came to us unable to walk. One year later, she's a fully mobile, self-taught innovator in the world of interpretive dance.

Credit our favorite vets at Palm Bluffs Veterinary for the initial guidance and Tiger Mom Natalie Guiuan for her patient physical therapy and believing in her.

Our role? "Well, she's got an appetite...and OMG, that face! Let's give her a chance..."
